Morning Smokes - Pairings for your Tea or Espresso
Mornings can be one of the best times of the day to relax with a great Cuban Cigar. However, some Cigars are suited to this time of the day than others. Here's my suggestions of Cigars that might just fit the bill for your morning smokes.
There are times of the day when a . You could argue that anytime is the best time to smoke a great Cigar. However, there's just something so tranquil when it comes to smoking a Cigar after your breakfast. There's nothing like reading a newspaper (or in this day and age your iPad), with a fine espresso with the perfect stogie to compliment it with.
Therefore the question just has to be asked - what Cigars would I suggest to you as a great pairing for that lazy morning. When you don't have to go to work. You can just lounge around in your dressing gown - or go commando for all I care! Careful where you drop that ash however!
I'm going to split the Cigars that I'm suggesting to you into two categories. Mild Smokes and Strong Smokes. This article isn't going to be overly technical. Some Cigars suit milder flavours, like tea, while others pair well with stronger brews, such as your double espresso.
If you are drinking a lighter brew, or had a rather light breakfast, then I would suggest the following mild Cigars
Hoyo de Monterrey - Epicure No. 2
- Width: 4 7/8"
- Ring Gauge: 50
- Price: ~£13.00
- Smoking Time: 50mins
Creamy. If I had to sum up the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 in one word, it would be that. I've always found the Epicure No. 2 to compliment a great milky tea or coffee.
H. Upmann Half Corona
- Width: 3 1/2"
- Ring Gauge: 44
- Price: ~£7.00
- Smoking Time: 35mins
The new kid on the block, the H. Upmann Half Corona has been produced for the smoker who has only a short amount of time on his hands. I've only smoked a few of these, and to tell you the truth I'm liking these more and more.
I can see this little Cigar fitting in my smoking rotation more and more, and one of moments where I can see myself lighting one of these is after breakfast. Although mild, the H. Upmann Half Corona does have a lot of flavour - cream, vanilla and hay.
Cohiba - Maduro 5 Secretos
- Width: 4 3/8"
- Ring Gauge: 40
- Price: ~£12.00
- Smoking Time: 45mins
The Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos just makes it in the mild strength category on my list. However, depending on your palate and preference to flavour, you can easily place this in the strong list. Anyway, the Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos is such a flavourful Cigar, with notes of espresso, spice and this sweetness that comes from the aged maduro wrapper.
I find that the Secretos is quite flexible when it comes to pairing with a nice hot beverage. A strong black coffee is possibly your best bet, however an espresso is just as perfect.
There are some Cigars that were meant for being smoked outside in the sunshine. These Cigars are usually light to medium in flavour intensity, however they still keep you interested, while maintaining a fresh palate.
Montecristo Petit Edmundo
- Width: 4.3"
- Ring Gauge: 52
- Price: ~£11.00
- Smoking Time: 40mins
Although the Petit Edmundo has only been around since it's introduction in 2006, the quality of this Montecristo is such that it's one of the best Cigars in this brand.
When I think of the Montecristo Petit Edmundo, I think of Espresso, hints of dark chocolate, and spice. If you're looking for a Cigar to kick start your day, then this Cigar might just be it. With it's fifty two, there's plenty of flavour.
Partagas - Shorts
- Width: 4.3"
- Ring Gauge: 42
- Price: ~£8.00
- Smoking Time: 40mins
If you're looking for a punchy, firecracker of a Cigar that will jump start your day, then look no further than the Paragas Shorts. This Minutos sized Cigar, is small when it comes to it's dimensions, however, it packs such a hefty punch!
The predominant flavour profile of this Cigar is white pepper, with a load of spice for good measure. A lot of old-time smokers swear by this Cigar to start their day off the right way.
