Diplomáticos Cuban Cigars - Models, Tasting Notes & Ratings
The Diplomaticos brand was introduced in 1966 to the French market, as a cheaper alternative to the Montecristo brand. The vitolas present in the Diplomaticos roster mirror the ones available in the Montecristo lineup. For example, the Diplomaticos No. 2 is a Piramide, the same size and length as the Montecristo No. 2.
Diplomaticos, whilst originally conceived as an alternative to Montecristo, share little in terms of flavour profile. Diplomaticos are found to be milder both in flavour and body than it's Montecristo cousins.
Recent Diplomaticos History
Whilst the range of sizes available in the Montecristo lineup has expanded in the last ten years, many of the vitolas within the Diplomaticos marque have been discontinued, due to mostly poor sales. The only Diplomaticos available currently in regular production is the No. 2, however there have been repeated rumours of it's discontinuation in the past three years.
Regional & Limited Editions
Diplomatios has been poorly represented in both Limited and Regional edition releases. As of September 2013, we have yet seen a Limited Edition Diplomaticos, and there has only one Regional Edition release, the Colleccion Privada, produced specifically for the Spanish market.
The No. 2 as of 2013, is the only Diplomaticos currently under regular production. Habanos SA have been slowly discontinuing the Diplomaticos year over and No. 5 in 2010.
Keeping with the Diplomaticos brand, generally the No. 2 wrapper has a rustic, somewhat veiny look to it.
Diplomáticos Colleccion Privada - Spanish Regional Edition
I'm not exactly sure when did the Diplomaticos Colleccion Privada become available to the Spanish Market, but reports indicate it was either November or December 2012.
The Colleccion Privada is the first Edition Regional that has been released under the Diplomaticos brand. Exclusive to Spain, this Petit Robustos will no doubt become a collectors item.
Diplomáticos Bushido - Asia Pacific Regional Edition
The Diplomáticos Bushido was created by PCC to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first Japanese citizen to visit Cuba. During the Keicho mission, samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga stopped in Cuba (then part of New Spain) on his way to the Vatican in Rome.
Translated from Japanese as ‘Way of the Warrior’, the Diplomáticos Bushido comes in boxes of twenty five and housed in intricate black lacquered boxes. A collectors item.
One of the scarcest regional editions in recent years. Due for release in 2014, limited boxes were made available to the Asia Pacific markets in early 2015. However, as of March 2016, the full allocation of the Diplomáticos Bushido has yet to been made public. As late as September 2015 it was alleged supplies were being boxed.
