Explorer by Adnams
Adnams Explorer is a zesty, citrus flavoured Blond Beer, with a mixture of Chinook and Columbus Hops, A taste sensation on the palate.
Type: Indian Pale Ale
Explorer is one of Adnams range of beers. It’s more of a modern real ale as opposed to some of their other range, such as Broadside and Southwold Bitter. Why do I say ‘modern’? Well, it’s all about the hops.
Adnams Explorer has a mixture of Chinook and Columbus Hops, meaning that the beer is not about the bitter, or the malts, but about the hops. Flavours are more citrus based than malt based. You can taste lemon. There’s some fruit notes going on in the smell.
The inclusion of these New World hops means that instead of traditional flavours, we have these new citrus flavours, made popular by new breweries such as Otley.
At 5% ABV, it’s a little stronger than you would expect from such a golden, blonde coloured ale, however, a word of warning, at this percentage, it’s ridiculously easy to drink. You could drink a few pints of this and forget what number you’re on.
Because of the inclusion of Columbus Hops, Explorer has a real zing of citrus hoppyness that explodes on your tongue.
Adnams Explorer suggests that it’s best served chilled, and I can agree with that. The flavours compliment the ale being just a little bit colder than other beer’s. Explorer is a great thirst quencher.
I could see Adnams Explorer as a great Real Ale for anyone who is stepping from the dark side of Lagers to the light of real beer. The flavours I think would be exciting enough for anyone who is apprehensive about drinking Real Ale to understand that there’s a little bit more going on than just an old man’s drink.
I have drunk two pints of Explorer now from the bottle. The first pint I had was with a Chinese takeaway, and let me tell you, it’s a great combination to have with greasy foods. The citrus notes cuts through the grease and helps clear your palate.
So, if we are lucky enough to enjoy another one or two days of the British Summer, then get out that Barbecue, get some chicken grilling, and drink a pint or two of Adnams Explorer. Excellent.
I suggest if you like beer’s from the Otley range, then you’re going to like this. The citrus notes will rock your world.
